Understanding the FCC’s Notice of Proposed Rulemaking and its Impact on 911 for the Enterprise

Back in September, the FCC commenced the rulemaking process for Section 506 of RAY BAUM’S Act, specifically, the section of the bill that may require enterprises with Multi-Line Telephone Systems (MLTS) to enable location determination capabilities for their users. A patchwork of legislation establishing 911 caller location requirements for enterprises already exists across America, but most states do not have location requirements in place; this rulemaking process could implement a 911 location standard for enterprises nationwide.
